Boeing's Phantom Eye Flies Again



See Boeing's Phantom Eye, the liquid-hydrogen powered unmanned airborne system, take to the skies for its second flight at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. The flight, which took place on Feb. 25, lasted 66 minutes, reaching an altitude of more than 8,000 feet and a speed of 62 knots.

Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV) Prototype



The DARPA ACTUV program aims to develop an unmanned autonomous surface vessel with the ability to track a quiet diesel-electric submarine overtly for months over thousands of kilometers, with minimal human input. SAIC provided conceptual design services in phase one of the program, creating an innovative wave piercing trimaran solution.

NAVAIR Clips: Sailors assist with onload of UCAS-D aboard USS Truman



Sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) assist with the onload of the X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System demonstrator. The air vehicle arrived by barge Nov. 26 from Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md.

Truman is the first aircraft carrier to host test operations for an unmanned aircraft. The Navy plans to conduct X-47B carrier deck handling tests aboard the ship.

Cooperative Quadrocopter Ball Throwing and Catching - IDSC - ETH Zurich



This video shows three quadrocopters cooperatively tossing and catching a ball with the aid of an elastic net.

To toss the ball, the quadrocopters accelerate rapidly outward to stretch the net tight between them and launch the ball up. Notice in the video that the quadrocopters are then pulled forcefully inward by the tension in the elastic net, and must rapidly stabilize in order to avoid a collision. Once recovered, the quadrotors cooperatively position the net below the ball in order to catch it.

Because they are coupled to each other by the net, the quadrocopters experience complex forces that push the vehicles to the limits of their dynamic capabilities. To exploit the full potential of the vehicles under these circumstances requires several novel algorithms, including:

1) an optimality-based real-time trajectory generation algorithm for the catching maneuver;

2) a time-varying trajectory following control strategy to manage the forces on the individual vehicles that are induced by the net; and

3) learning algorithms that compensate for model inaccuracies when aiming the ball.

RUAG presents two unmanned vehicle projects

ARTOR (Autonomous Rough-Terrain Outdoor Robot) research project



ARTOR is a research project involving a group of specialists from the Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ), from technical departments at armasuisse, and RUAG. The objective of this project is to improve the autonomy of a ground vehicle. The point of the UGV research programme as a whole is the setting up of a UGV competence centre in Switzerland. The programme is primarily driven by Switzerland's public safety and security requirements, not by the marketing possibilities presented by the technology.

ARTOR is already capable of navigating autonomously: rather than use GPS, it relies on data captured by sensors mounted on the vehicle. ARTOR is able to negotiate static and moving obstacles as its picks out the quickest way to its target via a number of via predetermined waypoints. It is also able to follow vehicles or people and can search for a route or area autonomously.

Two vehicular devices have been developed, both featuring electric propulsion: one is a wheeled vehicle approximately 100 cm long and 80 cm wide weighing 250 kg with a payload capability of 100 kg. The other is a tracked vehicle approximately 170 cm long and 80 cm wide weighing 425 kg with a payload capability of around 200 kg. Maximum speed for both exceeds 15 km/h. The average deployment time on a single battery charge is in the order of four hours. Depending on what is required of them, the vehicles can rapidly be equipped with a range of standard payloads.

But simulation technology is not the only field in which Rheinmetall is present at ILA. Since 1 July 2012, Rheinmetall’s former Airborne Systems unit has formed part of the joint venture Rheinmetall Airborne Systems, having joined forces with Cassidian.

For Cassidian, partnering with this part of Rheinmetall perfectly complements its existing product range in the field of unmanned aerial systems, or UAS.

Rheinmetall Airborne Systems makes the KZO unmanned reconnaissance system, one of the world’s most advanced unmanned aerial vehicles. The German Bundeswehr has deployed it with great success in Afghanistan. (KZO stands for “Kleinfluggerät Zielortung”, roughly “small aerial vehicle, target-locating”.)

Under the SAATEG programme, Rheinmetall Airborne Systems has supported the Bundeswehr with the Heron system since 2010, a long-range, unmanned aerial reconnaissance system now deployed in Afghanistan; (SAATEG is a German acronym meaning “System for imagery reconnaissance deep in the area of operations”). The Heron has clocked on more than 10,000 hours of flying time in the area of operations, and is set to remain in theatre for at least another two years.

The KZO and Heron both make a key contribution to protecting friendly forces in Afghanistan.

Thanks to its under-the-floor cargo loading system, the joint venture also plays an important role in the giant new A380 passenger jet’s success. All A380 aircraft – and numerous other planes as well – will be equipped with the Bremen-built system. Furthermore, Rheinmetall Airborne Systems has been awarded a contract to develop and supply the Load Master Control System for the A400M military transport plane.

Rheinmetall Airborne Systems has its own stand at this year’s ILA in the UAS Plaza (Display C4). Together with KZO and Heron, a new tactical UAS concept is on show: in cooperation with Swiss UAV, the company is developing a hybrid airborne system that combines the capabilities of a helicopter and a fixed-wing aircraft, thus lending itself to a wide variety of missions. Joining RAS’s existing airborne platforms, the new system creates a product family that blends extensive operational experience with cutting edge technical innovation.

A further Rheinmetall highlight at ILA is the OPALE. Standing for Optionally Piloted Aircraft Long Endurance, in future this twin-engine DA-42 aircraft will be able to operate in manned or unmanned mode. The system is therefore likely to prove especially attractive to customers operating in an environment of changing aviation regulations, as well as those with diverse mission requirements and/or facing cost constraints.

K-MAX Beacon-Enabled Delivery



The K-MAX unmanned cargo helicopter successfully demonstrated its ability to make a delivery and a landing within three meters of a beacon during tests at Ft. Pickett, Va., for the Army's Aviation Applied Technology Directorate in April, 2012. Developed by Lockheed Martin and Kaman Aerospace, K-MAX is currently being deployed in Afghanistan by the Marines. The Army has contracted with Lockheed Martin to develop, demonstrate and deliver autonomous technologies for unmanned air systems in support of in-theater unmanned cargo resupply missions, as well.
