Drones on Demand

Gofor provides drones on demand. Using the mobile app, you can task a drone to complete a variety of helpful tasks. "Uber for drones".

Gofor was shot with a combination of a C300, 5DMKIII, and a GoPro Hero+ on a Phantom I.

The mobile app interface for Gofor was created in Photoshop and either shot in camera, or replaced in post using Mocha and After Effects and the GreenScreen app for iPhone.

Gofor was written in Evernote.

Gofor is a future concept, designed largely as a semi-sequel to my first drone film "Our Drone Future". I was intrigued by the idea of designing a UI for a consumer drone interface; often the future UI's you see are so non-functional and clearly place aesthetics over any kind of real usability. I wanted to explore what a drone app UI would be like -- something that anyone could use, with obvious controls and intuitive functionality.

Taranis - The future of aviation technology

Taranis, the stealthy unmanned combat vehicle demonstrator, filmed during its initial flight trials. It's the most advanced aircraft ever built in the UK.

It made its maiden flight at an undisclosed location on Saturday 10 August 2013 under the command of BAE Systems' test pilot Bob Fraser.

The demonstrator made a perfect take off, rotation, 'climb out' and landing on its first flight. A number of other test flights have now taken place.

Northrop Grumman-built MQ-8C Fire Scout First Flight

The Northrop Grumman-built MQ-8C Fire Scout unmanned helicopter successfully completed its first flight on Oct. 31 from Naval Base Ventura County Point Mugu, Calif. Northrop Grumman is the prime contractor for the U.S. Navy's Fire Scout program that includes the combat-proven MQ-8B and the next-generation MQ-8C variant. The MQ-8C provides the Navy with increased endurance, range, and payload capacity.

X-47B UCAS B-Roll

Boeing's QF-16 makes its first unmanned flight

For the first time ever, a Boeing-modified F-16 flies without a pilot in the cockpit from Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida. Called the QF-16, the plane will serve as a full-scale aerial target for pilots and other military units to greatly enhance training.

Navigation, Guidance, and Adaptive Control Innovations for Unmanned Aircraft

The Georgia Institute of Technology Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Research Facility (GT-UAVRF) is known for its research in the areas of UAV navigation, guidance, and control. This work has included the first air launching of a hovering aircraft, the first automatic transition of an airplane to/from tail-sitting hover, vision-only formation flight, vision-aided inertial navigation, automatic helicopter flight with simulated stuck swash plate actuator, and automatic airplane flight with half of one wing missing. The navigation, guidance, and control challenges for Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs) are among the most significant barriers to wider practical use of these systems for military or non-military use. This includes sensing and avoiding other aircraft and obstacles as well as navigation without reliance on Global Positioning Satellite systems. This presentation will address recent progress in the areas UAS navigation, guidance, and control, with emphasis on adaptive flight control, vision-aided inertial navigation, and laser-aided inertial navigation. This will include progress in both theory and related flight test validation on unmanned research aircraft.

Speaker Biography
Eric N. Johnson (eric.johnson@ae.gatech.edu) is the Lockheed Martin Associate Professor of Avionics Integration, Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering, Georgia Tech. He received a B.S. degree from University of Washington, M.S. degrees from MIT and The George Washington University, and a Ph.D. from Georgia Tech, all in Aerospace Engineering. He also has five years of industry experience working at Lockheed Martin and Draper Laboratory. As Georgia Tech faculty since 2001, he has performed research in adaptive flight control, aided inertial navigation, and autonomous systems. He was the lead system integrator for rotorcraft experiments for the DARPA Software Enabled Control program, which included the first air-launch of a hovering aircraft, automatic flight of a helicopter with a simulated frozen actuators, and adaptive flight control. He was the principal investigator of the Active Vision Control Systems AFOSR Multi-disciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI), which culminated in vision-based air-to-air tracking and vision-aided inertial navigation experimental validation. His most recent work has included automatic low altitude high speed flight of helicopters, indoor and outdoor vision-aided inertial navigation, adaptive flight control, and methods for sensing and avoiding other aircraft.
