Autonomous Aerial Cargo/Utility System (AACUS)



The Office of Naval Research (ONR) demonstrates the Autonomous Aerial Cargo/Utility System (AACUS), which gives helicopters the capability for unmanned flight. AACUS consists of software and sensors that can be applied to a variety of rotary wing aircraft, and will provide the U.S. Marine Corps with the ability to rapidly support forces on the front lines, as an alternative to convoys, manned aircraft or air drops in all weather and possibly hostile conditions, with minimal training required by the requestor.

Navy's MQ-8 Fire Scout Helicopter Drone - Flight Operations

Video shows an MQ-8B Fire Scout unmanned autonomous helicopter from Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 35 Detachment 1 lifts off of the littoral combat ship USS Fort Worth. (LCS 3) for flight operations.

HSM-35 is the Navy’s first composite expeditionary helicopter squadron. The aviation detachment aboard Fort Worth consists of one MH-60R Seahawk helicopter and one MQ-8B that compliments the MH-60R by extending the range and endurance thereby enhancing maritime domain awareness. Unmanned Aircraft Team Takes On Firefighting Mission

US Army & Lockheed Martin Combine Unmanned Air/Ground Vehicles to Extend the Reach of the Warfighter



http://wp.me/p3cRXG-cIH | The U.S. Army Robotics Technology Consortium has funded a test employing an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) and unmanned aerial system (UAS) tasked to perform a combined, autonomous reconnaissance, surveillance and target acquisition (RSTA) mission. The 'Extend the Reach of the Warfighter through Robotics' (ERWR) demonstration that took place at Ft Benning GA on August 7 joined two systems produced by Lockheed Martin – the Squad Mission Support System (SMSS) acting as the ground segment and the K-MAX unmanned air vehicle providing the aerial segment.

“This level of mission cooperation between unmanned air and ground vehicles of this size, controlled beyond line-of-sight, is an industry first,” said Joe Zinecker, director of combat maneuver systems at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. “This demonstration could lead to expanded missions, such as remote sensing and monitoring of suspected chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive threats or events.” Zinecker added. http://defense-update.com/20140220_co...

174th Attack Wing Showcases MQ-9 Reaper Mission: Hancock Field, Syracuse



U.S. Airmen with the New York Air National Guard's 174th Attack Wing (ATKW) operate at the 174th's MQ-9 Reaper launch and recovery element (LRE). The 174th LRE handles all takeoff and landing functions of MQ-9 training flights from Fort Drum Wheeler-Sack Army Airfield in Watertown, NY. The LRE consists of a 14,600 square foot facility that includes a hanger, administrative space and multiple classrooms. Unmanned K-MAX Returns from Deployment



After a nearly three-year deployment, the K-MAX cargo UAS returned from deployment with the U.S. Marine Corps. K-MAX helped reduce the number of convoys on the ground and delivered more than 4.5 million pounds of supplies to troops.

Future Concepts - BAE Systems


Scientists and engineers at BAE Systems have lifted the lid on some futuristic technologies that could be incorporated in military and civil aircraft of 2040 or even earlier.

This technology allows jets to quickly heal themselves from damage sustained in flight.

The technology is a lightweight adhesive fluid inside a pattern of carbon nanotubes from which the aircraft is constructed and is released when damaged to quickly 'set' mid-flight and heal any damage.

This advanced use of materials would create a highly survivable jet, capable of entering even the most dangerous of scenarios to complete vital missions.



Scientists and engineers at BAE Systems have lifted the lid on some futuristic technologies that could be incorporated in military and civil aircraft of 2040 or even earlier.

A futuristic attachment weapon for aircraft that is capable of firing a concentrated beam of energy at the speed of light.

Currently in use on battlefields today are Directed Energy Systems which can be used to protect ground troops from incoming projectiles such as missiles or mortars via concentrated energy beams.

In future, these could be adapted into an attachment for aircraft, taking that capability to the air, allowing fast-moving jets to destroy targets mid-air with incredible accuracy, at a low cost per beam, and with a very deep magazine which holds beams.



Scientists and engineers at BAE Systems have lifted the lid on some futuristic technologies that could be incorporated in military and civil aircraft of 2040 or even earlier.

The Transformer is a flexible aircraft system that combines smaller jets for more efficient travel, before having them split apart to quickly adapt to any scenario.

The concept can be tailor-made to suit any scenario. For longer journeys, smaller sub-aircraft can be combined together during travel, to increase the range of the jet and save fuel through reducing 'drag'.

Once they have reached their objective however, the craft can then split off and adapt to any given situation -- whether that is going on the offensive if threatened, or performing functional tasks such as surveillance or the dropping of supplies.



Scientists and engineers at BAE Systems have lifted the lid on some futuristic technologies that could be incorporated in military and civil aircraft of 2040 or even earlier.

Smaller unmanned aircraft -- or UAVs -- are created by super high-tech on-board 3D printers, via Additive Layer Manufacturing and robotic assembly techniques. The 3D printers respond to data fed to them by a remote control room where a human commander decides what should be produced.

The UAVs are best suited to each scenario -- be it a group of wide-winged aircraft for protracted or enduring surveillance -- or rotary-winged UAVs to rescue single civilians or soldiers from dangerous situations. After use the UAVs could render themselves useless through dissolving circuit boards or they might safely land in a recoverable position if re-use was required.

This creates the ultimate adaptable taskforce, with a lead aircraft able to enter any unknown scenario and quickly manufacture an effective toolset for any task.
